Askari Trade Bead Pillow
kanju’s Askari Pillow is named to remember and celebrate the Askari, local soldiers that served with European armies in Africa during both World Wars. As a company that honors and celebrates African art and design heritage, we humbly call attention to the Askari with three cast bronze trade pendants stationed like three soldier figures in this design, framed by frosted rolled glass beads, ostrich shell beads (beads drilled by hand from Ostrich egg shell), and wooden seed beads.
Beneath thatched roofs and in the shade of mango trees, kanju artisans sew, bead and embroider pillow covers made with South African plush cotton linen in vibrant and subtle hues, embellished with unique trade beads sourced from across Africa and across ancient Afro-Asian trade routes, some of them centuries old. Each pillow is French-seamed and features a concealed zipper closure and down pillow insert.
