Urban Facade Photography by Sandy McLea
Each mixed media photographic work in South African fine art photographer Sandy McLea’s Urban Façade series is composed of photographs of graffiti in urban settings. McLea uses paper tole technique to layer repeated selections of an image and create a three-dimensional effect. By physically lifting graffiti off a facade, the artist invokes controversial questions about the nature of graffiti and whether it is vandalism or art and whether it belongs on the very structures on which it was painted by assigning it to a separate plane.
Urban Façade is a 7-edition closed series and each work is signed and numbered by the artist. There are six total artworks which comprise the Urban Façade series, however due to its popularity, only two works remain available. The artist considers the specific matting and framing featured in this series an important aspect of the composition and thus each arrives framed and ready for hanging.
