Cowrie Kuba Pillow

Bold, graphic, and richly textured, each Cowrie Kuba Pillow is one of a kind and an expression of the artistic heritage of the Kuba people of Congo. kanju’s Cowrie Kuba Pillow features base layer of woven raffia with individually crafter raffia symbols attached and cowrie shell accents. Colors are produced with indigo, natural oils, and vegetable dye.

Kuba cloth has traditionally been made for ceremonial use and illuminates the art of the Kuba people of Congo. Men strip raffia fibers and weave cloth on single-heddle looms, then soften the rough cloth, called mbal, by pounding it in a mortar. Kuba women decorate the base cloth with appliqués, following their curiosity in pattern making and improvise designs within parameters. Pillow features a concealed zipper closure and interior lining.
