Story
-
kanju’s Ashanti Pillow is named to honor the Ashanti (Asante) people who developed a large and influential gold-rich empire along Lake Volta and the Gulf of Guinea. The design features a large, center cast bronze trade bead pendant framed by ostrich beads (drilled by hand from ostrich eggshells), chipped glass or shell accent beads, and wooden seed beads.
Beneath thatched roofs and in the shade of mango trees, kanju artisans sew, bead, and embroider South African plush cotton pillow covers in both vibrant and subtle hues. Fabric is embellished with unique trade beads sourced from across Africa, some of them centuries old.
