This Azilal Atlas Rug combines the bright colors of the Boucherouite rug and the Beni Ourain rug's graphic patterns. The weave is slightly different, creating a shorter fiber rug, similar to velvet, instead of the thick shag of many traditional Benis. Named for the Atlas mountain region in which they are woven, Azilal Atlas rug patterns are unique, involving bright color palettes, and strongly associated with aboriginal patterns imbued with meaning and stories.
Moroccan Rug weaving began with the Berbers, who were the indigenous people of North Africa and inhabited Morocco before Arabs invaded it in the seventh century. These rugs are usually in bold colors and animated patterns, and the designs are almost always geometric or tribal. The colors and patterns are distinct according to the tribe that wove them. In the twentieth century, the Moroccan Rugs are widely collected in the West because of their unique tribal patterns. The wool of these rugs is plush and soft to the touch, the stripes woven in black wool, and the ivory wool ground.
