Story
-
The Bambara people of Mali have traditionally created works of art both for religious use and to define cultural and religious identity. kanju’s Bambara Carved Fish sculpture is a unique mounted example, carved from wood with articulated gills. Its bright painted body features a natural patina and signs of wear consistent with a vintage piece that has had a long journey from its maker in Mali all the way across the Atlantic Ocean.
Bambara artistic traditions include pottery, sculpture, weaving, and mask and while the tourist and art market is the main destination of modern Bambara artworks, most artistic traditions have been part of sacred vocations, created as a display of religious beliefs and used in ritual.
