Dwuza (Doo-er) means “sun” in Chichewa. kanju’s Dwuza Pillow features a sunburst design of ostrich shell beads (lightly textured warm white beads drilled by hand from ostrich egg shells), bone, lucite abalone, and hammershell sequins radiating around a single cast bronze bead.
Beneath thatched roofs and in the shade of mango trees, kanju artisans sew, bead, and embroider South African plush cotton pillow covers in both vibrant and subtle hues. Fabric is embellished with unique trade beads sourced from across Africa, some of them centuries old.
