Story
-
kanju’s Maasai Pillow is named to honor the Maasai people of southern Kenya and northern Tanzania, known for their elaborate and sophisticated dress and customs. The design features a central ostrich shell pendant (drilled by hand from ostrich egg shell) framed by a solid ring of wooden seed beads and outer halo of hammershell sequins.
Beneath thatched roofs and in the shade of mango trees, kanju artisans sew, bead, and embroider South African plush cotton pillow covers in both vibrant and subtle hues. Fabric is embellished with unique trade beads sourced from across Africa, some of them centuries old.
