Traditionally made out of cowhide or wood, these traditional Zulu Shields where often crafted for warriors for the variety of ethnic groups that made up the Nguni people of Southern Africa.
Though their main purpose was to provide protection, these shields could also be used to confuse the enemy; the Zulu army used the shields of their enemies to disguise themselves, and cause bewilderment among enemy ranks. Occasionally, they were also used as protection from the weather, as props during dances, or as drums.
Each piece is one-of-a-kind and possesses its own unique personality. Variations between items received and images shown can occur. To choose from our current inventory, images can be requested here.
