A Letter of Gratitude After Eight Remarkable Years

For the past eight years, kanju Interiors has been guided by a simple but deeply held belief: that beautiful design can also be meaningful, ethical, and rooted in fair trade. From the beginning, our mission has been about more than bringing extraordinary handcrafted pieces into homes. It has been about honoring the people, stories, traditions, and communities behind them.

Today, with deep reflection and heavy hearts, we share that kanju Interiors is departing this chapter of its business in response to a geopolitical climate that no longer aligns with our ethos or commitment to fair trade practices.

This has not been an easy decision.

It is difficult because kanju has always been built on relationships, on trust, and on a profound sense of responsibility to the vendors, artisans, customers, and team members who have shaped this journey alongside us. We believe fiercely in our mission. We believe in the work we have done. And we believe in the people who made it possible. That is precisely why this decision has been so hard.

What began as a vision to connect remarkable artisan craftsmanship with a broader audience became an extraordinary journey of growth, learning, and impact. Over the years, we have had the privilege of introducing more than 10 incredible brands to the U.S. market. We have watched artisan businesses grow and thrive. We have seen partners evolve from two-person workshops into thriving, multi-warehouse operations. We have had the honor of helping create visibility, opportunity, and momentum for makers whose work deserved to be seen, celebrated, and supported on a much larger stage.

That legacy means everything to us.

kanju has always stood for more than commerce. It has stood for connection. It has stood for story. It has stood for the belief that thoughtfully made objects can build bridges across cultures, and that ethical business can create lasting value for everyone involved. Publicly, we have always described our work as one of connecting handcrafted African artistry to global markets, elevating artisan collections, and supporting sustainable, ethical production. Those principles have never been marketing language for us; they have been the foundation of every choice we have made.

Because of that, we could not ignore the realities of the current moment. When the broader geopolitical environment no longer supports the kind of fair, values-led trade we set out to practice, we must listen carefully to what that means for our business and for the integrity of our mission.

Even so, this is not a message of defeat. It is a message of gratitude, pride, and responsibility.

We are incredibly proud of what kanju has built together with our artisan partners, vendors, customers, and team. We are proud of the platform we created for underrepresented makers and design voices. We are proud of the care that went into every partnership, every product story, every shipment, every customer conversation, and every collection. We are proud that, in our own way, we helped artisans grow not only their visibility, but also their capacity, resilience, and long-term opportunity.

As we begin this difficult but thoughtful transition, kanju will continue to do our best to ensure these groups grow and thrive. kanju will continue to do its best to ensure that the artisan groups and partner brands we have championed are positioned to keep growing and thriving in the next phase of their journey. Supporting these communities has always been central to who we are, and that responsibility remains deeply important to us.

To our customers: thank you for believing that your home could be a place for meaning, craft, and connection. Thank you for choosing pieces with soul. Thank you for valuing the human hands and histories behind what you brought into your spaces.

To our vendors and artisan partners: thank you for trusting us with your work, your stories, and your vision. It has been one of the great honors of our lives to help share your artistry with a wider world.

To our team: thank you for your creativity, your resilience, and your unwavering belief in what kanju could be. Every step of this journey has been shaped by your talent and heart.

And to everyone who has been part of the kanju story over these last eight years: thank you. Thank you for walking with us, building with us, and believing in a more thoughtful, ethical, and beautiful way of doing business.

This has been an amazing journey. We leave this chapter with immense gratitude for what has been created, pride in the impact we have made together, and hope for the continued success of the artisans, brands, and communities who remain at the center of this story.

With gratitude,

Meg, Founder of kanju Interiors
