What’s changing and why
Global tariff schedules and trade policies are shifting more frequently than usual. Because of this current political climate and policy fluxes, the final duties, tariffs, and import taxes on an order may change between the time you check out and the time your order enters your country. Pre‑collecting tariffs at checkout can lead to unfair over‑ or under‑collection. Billing tariffs at the time of import is the only way we can see to be fair.
How billing works (Made‑to‑Order / MTO)
United States deliveries
- For MTO items shipping to a U.S. address, kanju will issue a separate invoice for tariff fees.
- This tariff invoice does not include duties, any applicable taxes (e.g., VAT/GST where relevant), or customs‑brokerage fees. Those charges are paid directly by kanju to the carrier/broker when the shipment arrives in the United States.
- kanju will provide supporting tariff documentation with your invoice.
Deliveries outside the United States
- For MTO items shipping outside the U.S., tariffs, duties, VAT/GST, and customs‑brokerage fees are billed separately by the carrier or your appointed customs broker at the time of import.
Exception: If we confirm that kanju is handling the import for your international shipment, kanju will bill these charges separately instead of the carrier/broker.
Who bills you
- U.S. customers: kanju bills you directly for tariff fees and provides the related tariff documentation.
- International customers: The carrier (e.g., DHL/UPS/FedEx) or your customs broker will contact you to collect payment and release the shipment—unless kanju is handling the import, in which case kanju will bill you separately.
Your responsibilities as the receiver
Importer of record
- United States deliveries: kanju remains the Importer of Record. You agree to pay kanju’s tariff invoices promptly and to provide any information we reasonably need to clear customs.
- Deliveries outside the United States: You (or your designated broker) are the Importer of Record, unless we have agreed in writing that kanju will handle the import. You are responsible for paying all government‑assessed import charges to the carrier/broker when due.
Non‑payment
- If required charges are not paid, the shipment may be held, assessed storage, returned, or abandoned by customs. Any related costs (storage, return freight, disposal) are your responsibility and may be deducted from any refundable portion of your order, if applicable.
Estimates vs. final charges
- Estimates available (non‑binding): Our team can provide a good‑faith estimate of potential import charges upon request, but the final amount is set by your local customs authorities at entry and may differ from any estimate.
- Currency & receipts: Carriers/brokers typically charge in the destination country’s currency and can provide receipts suitable for accounting and VAT reclaim (where applicable).
Returns, refusals, and cancellations
- Customs charges are typically non‑refundable: Once assessed by customs, duties/taxes and brokerage fees are generally not refundable, even if you return or refuse the shipment.
- Refused deliveries: If you refuse delivery to avoid import charges, we may be unable to recover the goods. Where recovery is possible, return shipping, storage, and any assessed fees will be deducted from any eligible refund.
Exceptions and clarifications
- Domestic deliveries: Orders shipped within the same customs territory (e.g., domestic orders) do not incur import tariffs; however, local sales tax may be applied at checkout.
- Non-MTO items: For in-stock (non-MTO) items, we may offer different tax handling options (including pre-collection), which will be indicated at checkout.
- Using your own broker: If you prefer to use your own customs broker, please email logistics@kanjuinteriors.com within 2 business days of placing your order with your broker’s contact details so we can coordinate before the shipment departs.

- Tariffs/Duties: Government‑imposed charges on imported goods, potentially including anti‑dumping or countervailing duties.
