“Joy” is a radiant expression of movement, freedom, and emotional elegance, hand-carved by Zimbabwean artist Godfrey Matangira, a master sculptor in the renowned Shona stone carving tradition. This breathtaking piece captures a serene figure in a moment of transcendence, with flowing, undulating textures that evoke the ethereal nature of hair in motion or spirit in flight.
Crafted from serpentine stone, native to Zimbabwe, the sculpture features a striking contrast between polished black surfaces and textured grey stonework, allowing light to dance across its organic forms. Each chisel stroke by Matangira tells a story of the Shona people’s nearly 1,000-year-old stone-carving legacy and the deep cultural symbolism embedded in every curve: family, love, nature, and vitality.
