AAAA COOP― Beautiful Bogolan Totem Cloths

For centuries, the artisans of Mali have been mastering the art of Bogolan, a traditional textile-making technique that involves creating a base textile, hand-loomed in strips from locally grown and processed eco-cotton, and then dyeing and printing the cloths using natural materials such as mud, leaves, and bark. The resulting artworks embody techniques and symbolism of West African artistry that the creators believe imbue spiritual meanings to the cloths, which is why they are also commonly known as medicine cloths. kanju proudly partners with Mali-based business AAAA Coop to bring the stunning creations of their artisans to markets abroad.

AAAA Coop is a community-based initiative that brings together Bogolan artisans from different parts of Mali, offering a platform to showcase their skills and support their livelihoods. Through this independent cooperative, these artists have found a way to keep their traditions alive while also creating stunning works of art that transcend cultural boundaries an enable them to share their talents with the world.

Each of the Bogolan Totem Cloths is a masterpiece of intricate patterns, created by skilled hands as a community effort from the weaving of the cloths, through dyeing and painting the individual pieces, to the final design and packaging. The designs are inspired by the rich cultural heritage of Mali, incorporating symbols and motifs that reflect beliefs about the human spirit and our connections to one another.

Leila Atelier— is a hand crafted textile studio

By delving deep into the history of textiles and the craftspeople who make them while on an extended trip to India in 2018, Leila became entirely enraptured with cloth and the stories it carries, researching & exploring these traditions physically in India. In early 2020 she began weaving lessons in Cape Town, an activity which she dedicated almost my entire Coronavirus lockdown sabbatical to. In July of the same year she purchased her first floor loom and dedicated an unimaginable amount of hours, days, months to learning the craft, developing textiles with integrity and then products which would be both desirable & useful.

As the world re-emerged to some semblance of the before, she decided to throw all caution to the wind, making a break from her previous career as an art director in the film industry and giving her all to the burgeoning passion of materializing a life surrounded by beautiful, resonant textiles.

Over the next couple of years she's outgrown her studio several times, employed a studio assistant and then trained her to weave, built up a network of incredible clients and begun collaborating with other local Handweavers to craft products through which they hope to share the beauty of this craft, and the deep love that resonates in it.
