Inspired by the Chichewa word “Kuwaloka”—meaning “to cross”—this striking piece is handcrafted in Malawi using plush South African cotton and adorned with cowrie shells, bone beads, wooden seed beads, and a singular, central brass trade bead. These beads, some centuries old, are arranged in crossing, improvised patterns that honor the interconnectedness of cultures and stories across the African continent.
Hand-sewn and embellished beneath mango trees by kanju’s artisan collective, each stitch and bead placement reflects a level of craftsmanship and soul that machine-made goods could never replicate. This final pillow is truly one-of-a-kind, a piece of living history and handmade luxury that can never be reproduced.
