Ray Berman is a South African-born artist and longtime resident of Eswatini (formerly Swaziland), celebrated for his refined abstract oil paintings that merge architectural structure with expressive rhythm. Working in oil on canvas, Berman constructs intricate two-dimensional compositions characterized by complex line work, nuanced color palettes, and richly textured impasto. His deep appreciation for improvisational jazz influences the cadence and negative space within his work, giving each painting a musical sense of movement and balance.

Born in Johannesburg, Berman left South Africa in 1966, seeking self-imposed exile in Eswatini following Nelson Mandela’s imprisonment. There, he built a new life as both an architect and a painter, immersing himself in local culture and spiritual traditions. His creative philosophy draws from a deeply African understanding of art — that creation is not a solitary act, but one guided by ancestral voices and the spirits that move through the artist’s hand.
