STORY

Handwoven Floor Coverings by Amelia Jackson

“Many folks have lost the knowledge of how things are made, but we are very proud of our process. When our customers scan the QR codes on our labels, they have a chance to meet the actual person behind the product and see them in action.” Alan Glasser, Co-Founder

Amelia Jackson Industries was established in 1989 by Alan and Val Glasser, nurtured with tenacity and unwavering dedication. The project eventually blossomed into a thriving enterprise that employs dozens of talented weavers in their Cape Town studio. With a presence that extends beyond mere commerce, the allure of the brand finds its embrace within the intersection of high-quality artistry and a desire to create sustainably, with far-reaching, positive economic and environmental impact.

The name 'Amelia Jackson' evokes a profound sense of familial reverence and the history of textile-making. It pays homage to the founders’ grandparents and great grandparents, who were textile workers, and to the vision of reinvigorating a local industry that for decades was lost to overseas production, Guided by the cherished legacy of their forbearer, the company is tireless in seeking ways to incorporate upcycled textiles into their designs, utilizing fabric that otherwise might end up in landfills. Where raw sourced material is used, only locally produced, eco-grown fibers are incorporated.

An ode both tradition and to the future of our communities and planet, their creations stand as testaments to the enduring power of artisanry to transcend time, with designs that incorporate a vibrant mosaic of African craftsmanship and methods that support an important local industry to be revived and to thrive.
